Does anyone remeber a show where the main characters were puppet like things. It was a science fiction show?

and they flew around in little ship pod things. I remember they shot blue lasers. The main character was a white dude with slightly long brown hair (puppet person). I remember them shooting out from a larger ship as well and I have a brief memory of a large red ship that kind of looked like a large bird. I just remember the show being really good when I was a kid and we'd get the videos from the rental store and I just can't remember what it was called.
