What is the difference between pleading guilty or no contest?

I ran a red light and because I'm not 18 yet I have to go to traffic court instead of just being ticketed. I fully realize that I'm guilty but is it better to plead guilty or no contest? Is it true if you plead guilty they are forced to give you the maximum sentence where as no contest gives them the ability to be lenient?
